Vancouver Lake is currently facing a critical environmental challenge that threatens the boating and outdoor activities we all cherish. The current invasive milfoil infestation in our lake is rapidly expanding and is now encroaching on the rowing race course, the sailing race course areas, and all shallow areas including the shorelines. This negative and even dangerous condition impacts a diverse array of lake users including canoers, kayakers, stand-up-paddlers, course swimmers, and duck hunters. In short, it’s threatening all water-centered activities that enrich our wider community.
Thanks to WA Legislative support in the last 3 sessions, real progress has been achieved in creating a Clark County Strategic Lake Management Plan, including the exploration of a long-term funding mechanism to support future treatments, management and restoration.
But in the meantime the milfoil has also returned.
The current infestation has reached a tipping point where immediate action is essential. Each season we delay treatment, the problem becomes exponentially more expensive and difficult to control.
Invasive milfoil creates dense underwater mats that severely impact water recreation by:
- Clogging propellers and paddles
- Creating dangerous entanglement hazards for sailors, swimmers and paddlers
- Restricting boat and kayak navigation
- Degrading water quality and fish habitat
- Threatening the aesthetic and recreational value of our lake
This is why its so important, right now, that lake enthusiasts and the wider community demonstrate that we are seriously committed to the future of the lake and are willing to pull together again to rid the lake of this scourge. Donate today, and by doing so, send a clear message to Clark County, the City of Vancouver, and the Port of Vancouver, that we want our lake back!
